Jean Paul Gaultier fragances,for men.....

  1. Interesting nonparallelism in the language: It's for "les hommes"/"men" (generically), but for "la femme"/"Woman"/"The ['Eternal' (!)] Woman."

  2. I hadn't noticed that, Jeremy! I was too busy drooling over the erotic imagery!

But you're quite right -- to make it agree, it should be "les femmes"

The ad was directed at a British audience -- perhaps they thought we wouldn't notice!

    LOL

I'm thinking it could be intentional ... but, if so, I'm not clear on what message that language is meant to convey. Maybe the implication is that "men" are a herd of alike beings, while "Woman" is a creature that's individual and unique. I guess that could tie in with the respective quantities of the two genders in the ad.

  4. I love deconstructing ads! There's a lot going on in this one, it's got a narrative, unlike a lot of them, where they just yell BUY IT! at me.

Gaultier is having fun playing with gender -- the sexy young guy with the cute butt isn't a guy, but a beautiful woman.

The men in the ad are a herd, leering at the cute guy/girl.

She reveals herself at a moment of her choosing -- she is in control. Not the men!

Or maybe Jean-Paul's just teasing us -- but at least he's making us think!

Thanks Jeremy -- this is fun!
